Brand New Security College Offers Exciting Career Options

Our world is growing and changing and it is exciting when new programs are created at colleges to offer students new career paths that reflect the most pressing needs of today’s society.  In the area of security, a giant step forward has taken place in the form of a whole college dedicated to emergency preparedness, homeland security, and cyber security.  Find out exactly what college this is, what it offers, and the reasons for its creation in College Parenting Expert, Wendy David-Gaines’ new article, “Nation’s First Security College Creates Student Opportunities”

State and national need for security professionals create new opportunities for the college-bound and now higher education is offering a direct pathway. The nation’s first College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity will be located at the University of Albany (UAlbany), Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced during his 2015 State of the State address last week, according to the college’s website. “The College will be designed to maintain New York’s position as a front-runner in state and national security,” UAlbany also reported.

Parents can add one more benefit they receive when their child attends and graduates from college. Their students can make the world a safer place. Those interested can gain the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the threats that challenge local, regional and national security. And there are many career and job opportunities.

In addition to classroom learning, students will have a chance to learn by doing via internships and other forms of experiential learning in a variety of fields designed to protect both private and public sectors. “As corporations are increasingly developing plans to cope with terrorism, cybercrime, pandemics, and other threats to their operations, they will require a workforce trained in the very disciplines this college is designed to study and teach,” UAlbany declared. It gave the example, “According to a recently released National Governors Association report, cybersecurity employment is expected to rise by 650,000 employees within the next decade – growth that is projected to be faster than for all other occupations.”

UAlbany is a public research university within the SUNY (State University of New York) system. It is located in Albany, New York’s capital. It has over 17,300 students, 120 undergraduate majors and minors, more than 125 graduate programs, and 600+ study abroad opportunities. The College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity will be located on the recently acquired Harriman Campus location next to UAlbany.

To go along with Wendy’s article, I have found several unique college scholarship opportunities for students who are interested in a career that involves making our homeland a safer place.
