For many students looking to win money for school, one of the hardest things to do in regards to the scholarship essay is writing the very first sentence.

This college scholarship tip will help students write outstanding essays.

A common college scholarship essay question students are asked to answer is, “Why do you deserve to win the scholarship money”. To answer this question, most students automatically begin their essay with “I deserve to win this scholarship money because…”

Don’t do that!

Instead, give your essay a hook, or something that draws the reader in and inspires them to WANT to read the rest of the essay. The hook could be a surprising fact, an interesting quote, eye-opening statistic, or something personal and unusual that grabs the reader’s attention.

Scholarship judges have hundreds and even thousands of essays to read, start yours off with a BANG and impress them right from the beginning!

Another mistake is beginning the scholarship essay with, “My name is…”  Don’t waste valuable word space with information that is already available to the judges on the application. Always keep these tips in mind when writing the scholarship essay:

  • Begin with a hook
  • Don’t waste word space
  • Spark the judges interest
  • Be different

These are just a few of the tips that I share in my ebook, How to Win College Scholarships. The essay is the heart of the scholarship application, so learning how to create a powerful scholarship essay is essential to winning scholarship money. Find out how you can get your copy here.
