A great letter of recommendation can be a huge part of being chosen to win a college scholarship, so students should not take this section of the application lightly.
There are specific steps that can be taken to get a letter that is personal, believable, and impressive to the scholarship judges.
When asking trusted adults to write letters of recommendation, students should not be afraid to give them specific details about themselves that tie them to the scholarship to which they are applying.
Here are a few examples:
- A letter that is written for a scholarship that is offered to students entering the healthcare field would impress the judges if details were shared about the student volunteering at their local hospital.
- A scholarship offered for engineering students could include a letter from the after-school robotics club instructor explaining the student’s high aptitude for designing and building robots.
Scholarship judges want real, specific, and honest reasons why someone would recommend that student for their award, so students need to pick their recommendation letter writers carefully and share information with them that will make their letter accurate and memorable.
Giving the writer a scholarship or activity resume is also important.
The more personal details that the writer can share in the letter will back up the reasons why they are recommending the student to win the scholarship money.

College Scholarship Tip: Get a Great Recommendation Letter Click To TweetProfessionals that write letters of recommendation are often teachers or other school staff who may get hundreds of letter requests in a short period of time.
Students that help their writers with details about each scholarship they are applying for and include a resume are appreciated and will get a higher quality of letter than the average student.
Letter of recommendation writers also sincerely appreciate lots of advance notice to write the letters, and I recommend students to ask for the letters at least two weeks before the scholarship application is due.
No one likes to write under pressure, and a thoughtful student is always valued and admired.
THAT’S what needs to shine through in a great scholarship letter of recommendation!
