Scholarships Available to Students with Disabilities
“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” – Benjamin Franklin
The years leading up to making a college choice can be exhilarating, thrilling and challenging. But this exciting time that is replete with hope for the future can also be downright stressful — and the number one cause is money. A young scholar should be concerned with subjects like mathematics, literature, and science but with the cost to attend college skyrocketing many students find themselves worrying about money instead. And those budding academics with disabilities have enough hurdles to clear throughout their college experience without the addition of funding issues.
Thankfully there are a plethora of grants and scholarships tailored specifically for students with disabilities. These funding opportunities generally utilize the same criteria other scholarships use to select prospective students such as financial need and academic merit.
To make research easier for students with disabilities to find scholarships that match their unique situation, awards are often separated into different categories. ACLS Medical Training curated a comprehensive list of scholarships available for students with disabilities. These categories include:
General Disability Scholarships – available to students based on a variety of criteria
Chronic Health Condition Scholarships – available to students with chronic medical conditions
Hearing Impairment Scholarships – available to students who are deaf or hard of hearing
Visual Impairment Scholarships – available to students who are blind or visually impaired
Intellectual Disability Scholarships – available to students with an intellectual disability such as Down Syndrome or Autism
Learning Disability Scholarships – available to students with a variety of learning disabilities including ADHD.
Mental Illness Scholarships – available to students who have been diagnosed with a mental illness such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
Physical Disability Scholarships – available to students who are physically disabled.
It is important for any college-bound student with a disability to fully investigate scholarships relevant to his or her situation. Receiving additional funds to help cover the cost of higher education will ensure that all students, no matter what the circumstances, have access to the education required to achieve career and life goals.
