The James Alan Cox Photojournalism College Scholarship
Looking for a photojournalism college scholarship? Here is one worth $2500!
As technology advances, students are becoming more and more interested and talented in photography and photojournalism.
The James Alan Cox Foundation helps support students in photojournalism by providing several college scholarships and high-end digital equipment for high school students. There are three different kinds of awards available:
- Five (5) Digital Cameras will be awarded to five (5) high school students. (High school applicants should only submit still photographs. The video awards are for college and graduate students only.)
- Five (5) $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to five (5) college or technical school students, payable to their school. Four awards will be for video work and one for still photography.
- One (1) $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to one (1) graduate student, payable to their school, for video work.
Several forms are required for the application process, and all must be submitted online.
The deadline for the James Alan Cox Photojournalism College Scholarship is November 15. If this deadline has passed, add this award to your list and check back in mid-July when it typically reopens.
Winning Tips: There is a link on the site showcasing previous winners. Click the name of each past winner to get a feel for what kind of students the foundation is looking for in its scholarship recipients. Students should also view winning photographs and videos.
Keep in mind that winners were chosen with these criteria: Portfolio of work, financial need, essay, letters of reference, and school transcript. There are several specific details about pixel requirements, the number of photos submitted, video instructions, file size, and editing criteria. Follow these instructions to the letter and make sure all parts of the application are complete before online submission. A little background information about James Cox:
Jim Cox, a photojournalist for KTVK-3TV in Arizona, was killed in the media helicopter collision over Phoenix 15 years ago.
