Scholarship Application and Essay Honesty
It might be tempting to embellish the truth on your scholarship applications, but RESIST. Here’s why…
Yesterday I was Christmas shopping at Target. My total bill was $18.02. I handed the cashier $20.02. She handed me back $4.00.
Wait, what?
I immediately told her that she had given me $2.00 extra. She first tried to tell me I was mistaken, but then looked at the receipt and saw that she had entered $22.02 as what I had given her, instead of $20.02.
She was SO thankful and repeatedly told me how glad she was that I was honest about her mistake. I felt good that I had chosen to do the right thing and knew that had I chosen to keep the extra $2.00, I would have felt awful and guilty about it.
So, what does this have to do with scholarships?
Well, a LOT. When you fill out your scholarship applications and write your essays, you have a choice to make.
You can be completely honest or you can lie.
Scholarship judges are very smart, but they are not all-knowing or psychic. They do their best to pick the best candidate for their scholarship money, but how would you feel if they picked you and you had not been totally honest on your application and/or essay? Horrible, I hope!
On the other hand, if you had been completely honest, which sometimes involves admitting your faults, you will feel WONDERFUL when that letter of congratulations comes in the mail informing you that YOU are a scholarship winner.
Please don’t try to fudge your scholarship apps and essays! Be the strong person that you were taught to be and your honesty will come through to the judges as they read and learn all about you. Use the scholarship application tips found here to impress the judges and win more scholarships.
Honesty is, and always will be, the best policy. (Your mother was right!) <wink> ~ Monica Matthews
