The Zebra Safe Driver College Scholarship

Auto insurance specialists at “The Zebra” are offering a $500 college scholarship to students who best describe the moment they decided to permanently stop texting and driving.  This is a simple, straight-forward scholarship with very few requirements. The description page on the company’s website does not specify how many scholarships will be awarded, so there is a good chance that several students will win.

Here are the details of the Zebra Safe Driver College Scholarship:

  • $500 award to an unspecified amount of students
  • Online only
  • Application is only an essay and school transcripts emailed to the company
  • No G.P.A. or financial need minimum required
  • Open to all U.S. students in high school and above (including trade schools, grad schools, and all colleges)
  • Deadline:  August 31

Winning Tips:  The Zebra Safe Driver scholarship is all about the essay and how a student can best get across the essay prompt of “What was the moment that you decided to stop texting and driving, knowing once and for all that you would stick to it? And why was this moment the one it all changed for you?”

The word limit is 500-1000 words and judges are looking for a “well-developed” essay. Starting with a “hook” (more info here) is a MUST for this scholarship, as students need to get the judges attention right from the beginning of their essay.

Because this is pretty much an essay-only scholarship, the question (prompt) needs to be answered completely. Students can write their essay, hand it to a trusted adult to read without them knowing the prompt, and see if the reader can identify what the essay is supposed to be answering to make sure they have answered the question 100%. (More on this essay technique here) Learning the background of the Zebra Company (here) and sharing personal details will also get the essay noticed and appreciated by the judges (who are a panel of editorial and insurance experts).

The winning essays will be posted on the company’s website and students need to keep this in mind as they are writing, “This is what the Safe Driver Scholarship is about: the chance for students nationwide to inspire and educate us, our readers, and young drivers everywhere who could benefit from their peers’ experience”.
